About | This proposal for a new Cal Poly Pomona School of Architecture building in downtown Pomona focuses on massing and orientation. To accomplish this design, the pre-designed structure must be slightly modified. The tower is rotated 90 degrees to an east-west orientation for three reasons - better lighting and environmental control, shading the plinth’s rooftop on a greater number of days, and the minimization of the building’s scale at the main pedestrian entrance.

The massing pulls vertical strips from the bas relief, bundles them, and orients them vertically and horizontally to create a tower and plinth. This practice is inspired from the painted patterns on the nearby School of Arts and Enterprise. The volumetric design starts to fray towards the building’s top. The project works to respect the adjacent African American Advisory Building much as possible. The plinth is cut away to create a ground floor plaza where visitors can view the existing mural of Karl Benjamin.

Programmatically, the plinth is arranged to prioritize access to public spaces, with both the lobby and cafe acting as nexus points. The cafe serves as an informal entrance, with easy access to the eastern outdoor plaza near the Karl Benjamin mural. Deeper inside, the lobby directs visitors to galleries and lecture halls, with the model shop and fab lab tucked away in the back. Circulation between floors four through twelve is focused on intensive interconnectedness between each student’s studio space within a private sphere - circulation within the plinth is designed to welcome the public.
